After WTC Final Failure, Rohit Sharma's Big ODI World Cup Declaration
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma addressed his team's mindset and strategy following their defeat to Australia by 209 runs in the World Test Championship final at The Oval. India, while chasing a formidable total of 444, faltered and were dismissed for 234 on Day 5, with Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland taking four and three wickets respectively. This loss extended Team India's decade-long wait for another ICC trophy, with their last triumph being the Champions Trophy in 2013 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
During the post-match press conference, Rohit Sharma stated that the team would adopt a completely different mindset and approach for the upcoming ODI World Cup, scheduled to be held in India later this year. He emphasized the need to play with freedom, without the burden of match results. Rohit expressed the team's intention to think differently and execute strategies distinct from their previous approaches. Their aim would be to innovate and bring about a unique style of play.
Despite a promising start by openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, who put together a 40-run partnership, India's batting order succumbed to Australia's bowling attack and failed to survive until Lunch on Day 5. Reflecting on the innings, Rohit explained that their initial intent was to aggressively attack and put pressure on the opposition. However, he acknowledged the risks associated with such an approach and dismissed claims of a lack of concentration. Rohit highlighted the team's desire to play differently and strive for success in ICC tournaments, citing their numerous attempts without securing a victory.
With Australia clinching the World Test Championship title, they have now achieved success in all major men's cricket tournaments. The team, led by Pat Cummins, will carry this confidence into the upcoming Ashes Test against England, commencing next week.
